Golf’s world number three Lee Westwood is enjoying his rivalry with world number one golfer Rory McIlroy, his onetime stable mate and one of his best friends on and off the golf course. McIlroy got the better of Westwood in the Honda Classic to become the world number one, when both of them were in contention after then world number one Luke Donald stuttered in the World Golf Championship: Accenture Match Play Championships and his loss inadvertently handed the crown to any of the top two contenders for the crown, which McIlroy managed to secure by winning the Honda Classic.
But Lee Westwood believes that there is still a lot more to this rivalry and he is quietly enjoying the little banters with McIlroy, who many thought was his protégé and according to Westwood, he did help the youngster when he was taking his baby steps in the world of professional golf.
But Westwood also admitted that there is no other person in the world who deserves to be number one, simply based on sheer hard work and determination that McIlroy has showed over the last two years, coming out of nowhere to first win the Us Open title in 2011 and then becoming the world number one.
He also added that being third in the world behind two fellow British golfers made things a little more tolerable for him, even more so due to the fact that the three are great friends off the course as well.
Moreover, Lee Westwood also stated that Rory McIlroy knows that he cannot be number one forever, adding that sometime, he will get the better of him and some other time, the opposite will happen and that is what adds more spark to this new and developing rivalry in the world of golf.
